Father's Day

Father's Day is dedicated to honoring fathers and father figures, celebrating their role in families and society. The idea for a special day for fathers emerged in the early 20th century in the United States. In 1909, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, sought to establish a day for fathers, inspired by her own father's commitment to raising her and her siblings alone after her mother passed away. Dodd proposed the idea at her local church, suggesting that the day be celebrated in June, her father's birth month. The first official Father's Day celebration occurred in Spokane on June 19, 1910.

The movement for Father's Day gradually gained support but didn't gain official recognition immediately. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge encouraged states to observe the day. Still, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Finally 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making Father's Day a permanent national holiday in the United States.
