Eastern Greenland Time (EGT)

Note: As of 2024, EGT and EGST have been discontinued, with this region now adopting Western Greenland Time (WGT, UTC−2) and Western Greenland Summer Time (WGST, UTC−1) to ensure consistent timekeeping across all of Greenland.

UTC Offset: UTC -1

Eastern Greenland Time (EGT) operated at UTC−1 during the winter months, with a daylight saving shift to Eastern Greenland Summer Time (EGST, UTC+0) in summer. Sometimes called "East Greenland Time," it was observed in a small area on Greenland's east coast, including Ittoqqortoormiit.

Importance and Global Use of EGT

EGT was important for managing daily life, public services, and transportation in Ittoqqortoormiit, one of Greenland's most remote and isolated settlements. Maintaining a stable local time standard helped coordinate vital services such as education, healthcare, and seasonal logistics in a harsh Arctic environment where consistent scheduling is crucial for community well-being.

Globally, EGT supported standardized timekeeping for international shipping, scientific research, and cooperation across the Arctic. Although the region's population is very small, having a recognized and reliable time zone allowed for clear communication and coordination with international partners, contributing to Greenland's role in regional and polar collaborations.

Other time zones share the same offset as Eastern Greenland Time (EGT), but are known by different names. While their clocks align, they may represent different regions or countries based on local time zone definitions.
